Art is a form of expression that can be embraced by anyone—so why not share it with everyone? Unfortunately, many children with special needs often have limited access to artistic experiences. The question isn't whether they can create art, but rather how we can enable them to express themselves in their unique ways. After all, art is subjective, and so are the artists.
I am a special education teacher with LAUSD, and I have dedicated about 15 years to teaching students with special needs across various classifications. Currently, I teach a moderate to severe Intellectual Disability Severe (IDS) class for grades K-5, and I truly love it. Throughout my teaching career, I have ensured that my students have access to the world of art, regardless of the medium. It has always been my mission to introduce them to various art forms and provide them with enriching experiences.
Regardless of the art project we are exploring, I tailor the activities to each student's abilities. We all engage in the same artistic endeavor, but at levels that suit their individual capabilities. As I often say, "It’s not a matter of if they can do it; it’s about how we can facilitate their expression in their own way." Sometimes, simply being exposed to art is enough to spark creativity.
I have designed these classes not just for the kids but also to involve their parents. Art serves as a fantastic medium for family bonding. Creating a piece together can strengthen relationships and create lasting memories.
I have divided the sessions into two groups: Mild to Moderate and Moderate to Severe. Each class is an hour long. Small groups for each session, 6-8 kids. Below are the details regarding the sessions, including age ranges, days, and times. All sessions are on Saturday and Sunday, for now. Our first class will start on April 18 and 19, Saturday and Sunday. Each class is broken down by age group. See grouping times below.
I am excited to offer sessions where you only pay for what you sign up for—no monthly contracts required! You are not obligated to attend every week on the same day. Simply sign up, pay, and participate. It’s that straightforward.

A disability shouldn't stop anyone from finding their inner artist. When one is given the opportunity to explore, experience and most of all the "opportunity” to create, the possibilities are limitless. Art is subjective. So is being an artist. We have a quote on our door that states" When you enter this building, find your greatness." As you leave our building, we have another quote "When you leave this building, share your greatness." Let's find yours...

If your child is in the medium to high functioning physical skills, this is the class for them. It doesn’t matter the disability, what matter is the level of functioning they are able to do. They can be nonverbal.
